OPEN ARMS COMMUNITY AT A GLANCE

Serving our neighbors together

Open Arms Community seeks to mitigate the effects of poverty, low educational achievement, addiction, and socio-economic and racial prejudice by offering programs specifically designed to address these issues. Since 2000, we have been doing this with the help of volunteer staff, most of whom are Christian servants seeking to live out their faith and offer hope, peace, joy and love to their neighbors.

TUTORING

Helping children achieve

At Open Arms Community, we have dedicated volunteers with knowledge and experience in the field of education. We also have volunteers from a local university who not only help with homework but serve as mentors to our young scholars. Volunteers typically stay with the same children throughout their time with us at Open Arms. Each child is given individualized attention and encouraged to build the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

In addition to homework help, tutoring in reading is available for grades K - 3.

Children in grades 4 and 5 (and competent readers in grade 3) are invited to join our Kids Club where they focus on Social and Emotional Learning skills and get to do STEAM activities.

Both programs meet on Tuesday evenings, 5:30 - 7:00 pm, during the school year.

In 2024-2025 we are also hoping to introduce tutoring for middle and high school students on Thursday evenings, 6:00 - 8:00 pm. This program will offer help with homework and reinforcing concepts as well as mentoring for these young people as they begin to develop skills for life after formal education.
